The Rara Avis is another creation from Raúl Pérez, here it works with the indigenous red variety, Prieto Picudo, native to the area of León and one of the most-planted grape variety in the appellation VT de León. Here Raúl elaborates a wine with its unique personal style. Although he vinifies the wine in Valdevimbre, south of León province, it is sold without the VT Castilla y León Denomination of Origin. Grapes are sourced from old vines of Prieto Picudo. Fermentation and ageing take place in French oak for 13 months.
Raúl Pérez is regarded as among the most talented and innovative winemakers, almost a legend within the Spanish wine making world and abroad. The collaboration with other wine-makers and wineries have also proved a great success. He works with the autochthonous varietals of the area. He makes amazing wines in different appellations in Galicia and elsewhere, always small and selected productions. To get hold of his wines is not that easy as they are probably one of the most sought-after.
Tasting notes: Showing plums, sloes and red fruits, entwined with herbaceous and floral notes also a spicy element to round it off, with adequate acidity and lively tannins towards a smooth finish.
Notes: Would improve greatly with an hour’s decanting or allowing the wine to breathe in the glass.
