Production: Viña Balén, is a single vineyard wine, a very special and unique wine as it has been made from the only centenarian Grenaches found in el Valle de Hecho, in the Aragonese Pyrenees. To make the Viña Balén, Pilar and Ernest from Bodegas Bal Minuta sourced the Grenache from a small plot which they have recovered in the village of Embún, Valle de Hecho in Huesca, located at 850 meters above sea level and planted with very old Grenache vines of an age ranging from 70 to 100 years old. The wine has gone through a maceration for 48-72 hours, fermented in stainless steel vats with its fine lees and aged during 12 – 14 months in a 400-liters oak barrel afterwards it will age a further 12 months in bottle before being released in the market. A very exclusive and unique wine of very limited production, just 750 bottles were made.
The vineyards are farmed ecologically, and the wine is protected under the Ordesa-Viñamala Biosphere Reserve.
Bodegas Bal Minuta is a young and small project run by a passionate and talented young couple, Pilar Gracia and Ernest Guasch, both enthusiastic oenologists with a formidable curriculum of experience and youthful passion that shows in their winemaking. After their enology studies in the URV in Tarragona, they have gone through the experience of working in different vineyards in different parts of the world and it was in 2012 when they embarked on their own project, settling at the old family home of Pilar’s grandmother in Barbenuta, a very small village in the municipal district of Biescas (Huesca) in the Aragonese Pyrenees, a village set in an idyllic location at 1300 meters of altitude, here, on the family land, they had planted their vines between 850 and 1350 meters, which makes them so far, the highest vines on the Iberian Peninsule. They work white varieties of central European origin like Riesling, Gewürzstraminer and Chardonnay and also red varieties like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc which are ecologically farmed, they do not employ insecticides, herbicides or fungicides using those permitted only by the organic agriculture as organic fertilizers and natural products. Their first vintage come out in 2015 and since then, Bal Minuta has established itself in the market with its small production and growing steadily. Today beside the vineyard at Barbenuta, they have also recovered a small vineyard planted with centenarian Grenache vines, located in the village of Embún in El Valle de Hecho, at an altitude of 740 meters above sea level, from here comes the Viña Balen, a 100% Old Grenache wine. Also, they work 1.5 ha of vines in the village of Rapún, near Sabiñanigo, here, they have recovered an old vineyard and replanted with chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, Tempranillo and merlot.
Tasting Notes: Good intensity aromatic, red fruit, slightly mineral and balsamic notes. Deep and intense on the palate, silky textured, exhibiting rich red fruit, mineral notes and good acidity. Finishing long and fresh.
