El Rapolao Ultreia is made by Raul Perez at the winery located at Vilafranca del Bierzo in León. Here the Mencia is the main protagonist although is mixed in small percentage with other varieties. It comes from the oldest plots in Rapolao, the coolest vineyard in Valtuille, from vines of over 70 years in age, growing on soils rich in clay on a northern facing slope at an elevation of 500 meters. Fermented with whole clusters in large open wooden vats, with shorter skin contact of approximately 30-40 days, and ages for 12 months in used French oak barrels.
Raúl Pérez is regarded as among the most talented and innovative winemakers, almost a legend within the Spanish wine making world and abroad. The collaboration with other wine makers and wineries has also proved a great success. He works with the autochthonous varietals of the area. He makes amazing wines in different appellations in Galicia and elsewhere, always small and selected productions. To get hold of his wines is not that easy as they are probably one of the most sought-after.
Tasting notes: Opens beautifully on the nose, fresh and aromatic, scents of wild berries fruits and violet flowers intermixed with notes of aromatic herbs. On the palate is intense and complex with a perfectly balance and harmony, fine tannins and freshness all the way to the end.
