Production: Pólvora is one of the 7 wines that comprises the collection of “Vins de la Memòria”, a small but very personal and highly emotional project by Xavi Nolla, a sommelier and wine educator, With this emotive project, he pays tribute to the memory of his grandfather, Agustín Pérez and many other comrades-in-arms that were immerse in the Spanish Civil War, a battle that marked and entire era and disrupted so many young lives. The Vins de la Memòria collection consist of 7 different wines of which 4 wines have already been released, to complete this project, Xavi has invested many hours of documentation work and historical research, determined to recover the steps taken by his grandfather and his comrades in battle. Each wine tells a story, reflecting a place and an episode related to the moment lived by his grandfather during the war on the republican side. Each of the wines have been made from unique vineyards, selected along the route that would take the “Division 27”, known as “La Bruixa” (the witch), the battalion where Xavi’s grandfather fought. A route of vineyards that could be found on the battlefields, on its way from the Front of the Battle of the Ebro, through all the different posts they were destined and on their flight to France and their time spent at the concentration camp in Argelès-sur-Mer in Roussillon. Pólvora tells the story of a retreat, the flight of Agustín from La Terra Alta, passing through L’Espluga de Francolí in the DO Conca de Barberà, where they had to spend some time. For its elaboration, Xavi Nolal has managed to harvest a single vineyard of Trepat, the main variety of the region, “Barranc de la Pasquala”, located between the north face of the Prades mountain range and the village of Montblanc, growing on mainly clay and slate soil at an altitude of 400 meters. Organically farmed and certified by the CCPAE the Catalan Council of organic production. The wine has been traditionally vinified in 650-liter chestnut barrel and aged for 3 months in the same cask. It is a fresh and light red wine, quite fragrant displaying plenty of red fruit and spices, a wine reminiscent of the coldness of the woods, hope, iron and gunpowder. Only 1266 bottles have been produced from this vineyard.
