Established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, renowned as the father of Japanese Whisky, Nikka Whisky built its first distillery in Yoichi, on the island of Hokkaido, less than a mile from the sea, an ideal site in Japan for whisky-making, where the water is sourced from an underground spring that runs through peat and makes it the ideal water for whisky production and its proximity to the sea gives the whisky a complex and saline character. The distillery remains loyal to the whisky-making tradition dating back to its foundation using techniques such as the use of coal-fired pot still by a direct flame, a traditional method that most Scottish distilleries have since abandoned.
The Nikka Yoichi has been distilled and matured at Nikka Hokkaido Yoichi distillery, crafted using traditional methods, such as direct coal-fired distillation, the single malt expresses a subtle balance between smoky, fruity and floral aromas. It is a full-bodied smooth whisky, intense aromas of peast, smoke, spices, fresh fruit (melon, kiwi) and nuts (almond, walnut), slight notes of chocolate on the palate which are taking over by the peat notes. Long and silky finish.
