Merula is a single-varietal Merlot red wine. The grapes come from the "Mas Sapera" estate in Pontons, in the Alt Penedès region, province of Barcelona. The 14 hectares of low-yielding, slow-ripening vineyards are located in an exceptional mountain landscape made up of mostly shallow, poor, clay-rich soils.

The wine is made by DG Viticultors, a young company established in 2006 by Pedro Domènech and Antonio Garcia. A project based entirely on wines exclusively from their two estates, "Mas Fonolls" and "Mas Saperas", their range of wines reflects the unique characteristics of each varietal planted in a specific soil and climate in an exceptional mountainous landscape in the Catalan pre-coastal region. They work a total of 54 ha of vines, growing mostly on very poor and shallow soils with abundant clay. 

Production:

The vineyards are grown using sustainable viticulture methods.

The harvest is done manually. Fermented with 30% whole bunches and 70% destemmed. Maceration and fermentation for three weeks at a controlled temperature.

Aged for 6 months in stainless steel tanks and 6 months in 400-litre French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes:

Very expressive, with distinct notes of ripe red fruits combined with floral notes, toasted and spicy undertones. Light, juicy, and pleasant on the palate, with red and black fruit, lightly spiced. Finishing with soft tannins and nice ripeness.
