Pas de l'Estudiant is a red wine of great character and elegance, a blend of Hairy Grenache as the main protagonist combined with small amounts of Carinyena and White Grenache.
It is named after the path that crosses the top of the vineyards, the route that the children of the Sierra d'Almos used to take to get to school in the nearby village of Capçanes, 5 kilometers away. North-facing terraced vineyards located on a steep slope on limestone and stony soils in the Capçanes district.
Pas de l'Estudiant belongs to the range of wines from the personal project of Josep Grau Viticultors. The grapes are sourced from the 36 hectares of vineyards he works in the Montsant area, low-yielding old vines, predominantly red Garnacha and Samsó, between 30 and 80 years old and planted on slate and granite soil. The wines are made with little intervention by means of spontaneous fermentation and indigenous yeasts.
Production:
All the work in the vineyard is done manually, with no chemical-synthetic products used. The vines are organically farmed.
Hand-harvested. The grapes undergo an exhaustive selection process both in the vineyard and the cellar. Fermented in a truncated cone-shaped 2500-litre Austrian oak foudre.
Aged for 9 months in the same foudre.
Production of 3344 bottles.
Tasting Notes:
A pure and vibrant wine of great character, elegance, and finesse. Very expressive on the nose, with aromas of red berries reminiscent of forest cherries. The mouth has depth and is velvety-textured, with a marked mineral character and well-integrated tannins. A wine that opens up in the glass every minute, gaining complexity.
