Mas Vilella comes from the estate that bears its name, "Mas Vilella", sourced from the vines planted by Albert Jané's parents in 1984. The estate is composed of chalky and very poor soils where they grow very low-yielding Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which have been producing it since 1988. This wine, currently elaborated by Albert Jane, makes one of Spain's best Cabernet Sauvignon.
Elaboration:
Manually harvested and hand-selected. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in large 300 and 400 litre new and second use French oak barrels for 12 months.
The wine is organically farmed and produced, duly certified by the authority CCPAE, the Catalan Council of Organic Production, the public watchdog responsible to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Catalan government.
Tasting Notes:
Intense garnet cherry colour, clean, and good intensity. Aromas of very ripe black fruit, menthol, minerals, Mediterranean undergrowth herbs, and spices. In the mouth it has good structure, juiciness, and liveness with marked sweet tannins of quality. Finishing long with elegance.
THE PROJECT
After Acústic Celler in Montsant and Ritme Celler in Priorat, Albert Jané, originally of Celler Jané Ventura in Penedès, starts his latest and recent personal project, which takes him back to his roots. He delights us with two white wines and two red wines 100% from autochthonous varieties, of which he is a strong believer.
He has added after his father's death the single-estate wine, Mas Vilella, from old vines at the Finca Mas Vilella, an old traditional Catalan winery from the XVI century in the Baix Penedés and the Alt Camp in the province of Tarragona with vines overlooking the Mediterranean Sea from the hills of the majestic Sierra del Montmell.
