Priorat is a very special place; the scenery is of great beauty up in the mountains, and the region's wines are among the finest made anywhere in the world. As with all great wines, their potential lies in the terroir and in the work and dedication of the wine growers and all the forefathers who had looked after the vines and written the history for the present generation to continue, and this is exactly what the latest addition to the Familia Nin-Ortiz, “La Rodeda”, is all about.
The grapes are sourced from a single-vineyard “Tros de la tereisna i Daniel”, a small plot of just 0.4 ha planted with Garnacha Peluda, a strain of the traditional local Garnacha with a more rustic characteristic but creating fine and delicate wines. The vines are about 80 years old and grow above the village of Porrera on a steeply sloping hillside made up of black slate soil.
Production:
A wine from organic and biodynamic farming. Hand harvested. Fermented whole cluster with natural yeasts and maturing in a new oak barrel. It comes duly certified as “Velles Vinyes” by the DOQ Priorat.
Tasting Notes:
Elegant and complex nose of red and dark berry fruits, mineral and spicy notes, and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, the wine has texture, class, and distinction, with a perfect balance of acidity and dryness.
Nit de Nin is the personal project of Ester Nin, with 2004 being her first released vintage. Today, the winery is a strong reference in the region as a producer of high-quality wines. Since 2019, the Nin-Ortíz family has been elaborating their wines in the new winery at the "Les Planetes de Porrera" estate and they work 18 hectares of their own vineyards.
Their wines have been produced under artisan and organic agriculture since 1999, and since 2002, they have been certified by the Consell Catalá de la Producció Agraria Ecológica. In addition, they have also applied biodynamic farming philosophies since 2006 and are part of the distinguished "Reinaissance de les Apellations", an international group of renowned biodynamic wineries.
All their wines come from their own vineyards, costers (natural slopes) worked with mules. The grapes are harvested early in order to preserve the freshness of the berries. No industrial yeasts are added and only a small amount of sulphur is added just to prevent oxidation and to ensure long ageing.
