La Llorona is a vibrant, mineral, and complex white wine crafted entirely from the Godello grape variety by winemaker Veronica Ortega. The grapes are sourced from selected old vines, averaging 35 years of age, growing on sandy-clay soils at an altitude of 500 meters in the village of Pieros within the Bierzo DO.
Production:
Hand-harvested. Destemmed, followed by one's night maceration with skin contact. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Aged for 9 months in French oak barrels of various sizes.
Tasting Notes:
A vibrant, mineral-driven wine, with a remarkable complexity and a distinct Atlantic character. It combines mineral notes with fresh fruit, peach, and herbal notes such as fennel, elderflower, and chamomile on a very fresh citric background. On the palate, it displays good body and structure with a perfect balance between power and freshness.
Veronica Ortega, originally from Cadiz, belongs to the new generation of young winemakers: perfectionist, enthusiastic, talented, and most of all, innovative and restless. With a formidable CV when it comes to winemaking, Veronica can boast of having gained expertise at some of the world’s greatest wineries, including Clos Erasmus and Alvaro Palacios in Priorat, Domaine de la Romanée Conti in Burgundy, Domaine Combier in the Rhone, and Niepoort, among others.
Her personal project takes off in 2010 when she relocates to the Bierzo village of Valtuille de Abajo and begins producing her own wines from two very old vineyards of Mencia farmed ecologically. Her wines have proved to be a great success, earning her high recognition among the region's winemakers.
