The grapes are sourced from biodynamically farmed small hillside plots planted with 60-year-old Mencía vines around the village of Corullon in the appellation of Bierzo.
The wines are fermented in large oak barrels and aged for 9 months in French oak barriques, of which 20% are new.
Tasting Notes:
Fine aromas of mature red and black fruits, wild berries, and slight floral and toasted notes with good minerality. Ripe fruit, lively and firm on the palate, with a smooth oak and easy-going texture.
Descendientes de J. Palacios is Álvaro Palacio’s latest project. Placing his trust in the potential of the Bierzo area, a lesser-known region with wonderful hillside vineyards and a fantastic grape variety, Mencía, Álvaro and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios established the winery in 1998 in the northwest Spanish village of Villafranca del Bierzo, honouring the memory of Álvaro’s father and Ricardo’s grandfather, who passed away in 2000. The 30 hectares of owned vineyards are scattered over 60 small plots around the village of Corullon. The vines are planted on a variety of soil types, elevations, and exposures, with ages ranging from 40 to 90 years, and they are farmed biodynamically.
