En Números vermells Black Label is a cuvée of mainly Grenache (both Negra and Peluda, "hairy Grenache") and Carignan sourced from old vines planted in Costers. The fruit is sourced from different vineyards across Priorat’s best sites, mainly around Torroja and Bellmunt del Priorat, although also from vineyards in Poboleda.
Production:
Harvested by hand, fermentation takes place in open 300- and 500-litre French oak barrels (new and used) and in clay amphoras with a long maceration of about 25 to 32 days. Afterwards, it ages in the same barriques, where it will spend 13 months. Bottled unfiltered.
Tasting Notes:
The wine is intense and rich with a complex bouquet, showing powerful fruit, especially red fruits, liquorice and spice, fresh herbs, and fennel, and marked by the characteristic minerality. On the palate, it is warm and generous, with marked tannins and a good balance between fruit and acidity. Finishes long and warm.
Note: With a good structure to age, it will improve in the cellar during the next 10–12 years.
En Números Vermells is Silvia Puig’s individual project; she is a young but very experienced winemaker with a formidable CV when it comes to winemaking and belongs to a new generation of winemakers in the Priorat. She makes amazing wines in small quantities and in a very artisanal way.
In 2008, she began her project by making just one single barrel in a small garage converted for this purpose in the village of Torroja; today, she has her own place in the village of Gratallops, where she produces the wines. All of the fruit is carefully selected from several plots staggered in costers (a Catalan word meaning steep slopes) and terraces with soils dominated by the characteristic “llicorella” or slate in various locations around the Priorat. She cultivates some plots with very old vines, some of which are 100-year-old vines, from which she produces her signature wine, "En Numeros Vermells Centenary Carinyenas".
