Te Mata was established in 1896, and to this day, the winery remains the property of the family. Te Mata Estate specialises in producing high-quality, classic wines. The winery handles all stages of its wine production, from growing the grapes on the vines to winemaking and bottling. Actually, it is recognised as one of New Zealand's most prestigious wine producers, producing internationally acclaimed wines exclusively from its own vineyards in Hawke's Bay.
Production:
This single-varietal Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from Te Mata Estate's Woodthorpe Terraces vineyards in the upper Dartmoor Valley in the Hawke's Bay region. Cultivated using sustainable viticulture methods, the vines were planted in 1994 in soils composed primarily of alluvial stone, clay and sandy loam.
In order to preserve the finest aromas and flavours, the grapes undergo a minimal vinification process. Separately vinified by parcel, the grapes are destemmed, fermented in contact with the skins and undergo prolonged maceration before being pressed.
Matured in a mixture of new and used French oak barrels (12% new) during 11 months.
Tasting Notes:
A bright and clean red cherry colour. Displays a wide range of aromas of dark fruit, ripe cherry, plum, redcurrant, and raspberry along with prune and cinnamon notes. Entry on the palate soft and sumptuous, presenting fine, savoury tannins and soft liquorice and sandalwood spice. Rounded and refreshing finish.
