Haart Rielsing Goldtröpfchen Spätlese comes from vineyards on steep gradients of 70% in the Goldtröpfchen area, a 60-hectare escarpment of clay slate soils and south-facing, that rises directly above the small village of Piesport. In this top location yields are extremely reduced (50 hl/ha).

Vinification:

Hand-picked grapes. The must is partially fermented with indigenous yeasts, going through a long and slow fermentation at cool temperatures. Resting for a short time with its fine lees before its bottling, approximately eight months after the harvest.  Residual sugar: 86.3 g/l

Spätlese: literally means late harvest, wines of higher quality harvested at the end of the autumn, from grapes which have been allowed to ripen longer than usual, increasing the intensity and the flavours of the fruit.

Tasting Notes: Quite intense nose with some stone fruit and lychee aromas, minerals and some of the finest earthy slate notes. Full-bodied, rich and ripe. Slightly sweet, it has firm acidity, rounded fruit flavours, and a good balance of fruit, sweetness and acidity. The wine finishes long with a highly refreshing fruit character.

Notes: A promising wine that will gain in complexity and expression with age, best after 10 years and more.

Excellent as an aperitif or as a companion to Asian or spicy dishes. After several years of ripening, the natural sweetness of the fruit mellows down and will surprisingly accompany many dishes.

THE WINERY

The Haart family prides itself on being one of the oldest local winemaking families in this part of the Mosel. Weingut Reinhold Haart is without doubt a privileged place by the Mosel’s riverbank, in the village of Piesport, in the very heart of the Mosel, where the Haart family has been producing wines since 1337, from grapes grown exclusively in their own estate in one of the region’s best vineyards.

Today their 8 ha of vineyards from a diversity of sites produce a wide range of elegant and fine Riesling wines from the ripe fruit and its excellent terroir. Vineyards climbing uphill in steep sites overlooking the river, exposed to the sunlight and growing on slate-rich soils. Yields are kept low, and the fermentation takes place in cool with natural yeasts, either in stainless steel or in the traditional oak barrels.

Their wines are natural fruit sweetness with a great ageing potential.

The winery is a member of the Bernkasteler Ringan association of the top wine estates of the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer river valleys and the oldest wine auction company in this growing area.

Piesport is a small town on a sharp bend in the Mosel River in the Mosel wine district of Germany. The town of Piesport contains the ideal sites for wine growing: a steep amphitheatre facing south. The name of the slopes flanking the village, the single vineyard site Goldtröpfchen (little drop of gold), is a splendid south-facing site protected from winds by its location on a loop in the river. The soil is quite complex, composed of quartz with stony clay and slate rich in iron oxide. It is famous for gently honeyed wines with great fragrance and very mineral in character; here, half the wines are classified as great growth and the other half as first growth.  The vast plantation across the river is known as Piesporter Treppchen.
