Production:  

Made mainly from Tempranillo and a smaller proportion of Mazuelo (also known as Carignan) and sourced from 18 different plots located in the municipalities of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Ábalos and Labastida in La Rioja.

Harvested exclusively by hand by experienced pickers, the bunches of grapes are first hand-selected at the winery, and after destemming, individual grapes are hand-selected again. Fermentation takes place in Oak Vats and stainless steel tanks and ageing in one year French oak barrels during 16 months.

Tasting Notes: 

An intense nose of black fruits, spices, and licorice. Full bodied-palate of cassis fruits, along with coffee and spice flavours and wonderful balanced tannins.

Notes: It is recommended to decant the wine. Enjoy through 2032.

THE WINERY

Bodegas Contador was established in 1995 by winemaker and winegrower Benjamin Romeo in a century-old cave hewn into the rock beneath the Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja, where Benjamin produced his first vintage of “La Cueva del Contador”.

From then onwards, he started to acquire vineyards and plots best suited for growing vines in order to increase his vinification capacity. In 2008, a new winery had to be built to accommodate the increase in production. The new winery is located at the foot of the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra and owns more than 50 different plots of various soils, microclimates, altitudes, and clones.
