Te Mata was established in 1896, and to this day, the winery remains the property of the family. Te Mata Estate specialises in producing high-quality, classic wines. The winery handles all stages of its wine production, from growing the grapes on the vines to winemaking and bottling. Actually, it is recognised as one of New Zealand's most prestigious wine producers, producing internationally acclaimed wines exclusively from its own vineyards in Hawke's Bay.

Production:

A single-varietal Syrah red wine. The grapes are sourced exclusively from vineyards owned by the Te Mata estate in the Hawke's Bay region and cultivated using sustainable viticulture methods. The vines are planted on gravel plains composed of stones that reflect sunlight and heat, as well as allowing water to filter through easily

In order to preserve the finest aromas and flavours, the grapes undergo a minimal vinification process. Separately vinified by parcel, the grapes are destemmed, fermented in contact with the skins and undergo prolonged maceration before pressing.

Ageing takes place in a mixture of new and used oak barrels, where the wine spends 12 months with regular racking. Clarified with egg white before bottling.

Tasting Notes:

Bright deep red colour. A wine of great depth and intensity. Displays a wide range of aromas of ripe red and black fruits, plums, blueberries and raspberries, along with hints of spice, black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla and floral perfumed violets. On the palate, it is silky with fine tannins and layers of fresh fruit. A tasty and refined finish.
