Merit is the red wine produced by the renewed Perinet winery. A blend mostly from Merlot and Syrah complemented with Grenache and Carignan, a full expression of licorella, the rich slate soil which is the essence of the Priorat. Sourced from two of Perinet’s estate vineyards, the Merlot and the Syrah come from “Mas Vell”, a plot sitting at a higher altitude, and the Garnacha and Cariñena come from “Mas d’en Xes” estate vineyard, a plot that forms a natural amphitheatre near the base of the mountain range of Montsant. The grapes had been hand-picked at an earlier stage, fermented 100% in inox, and aged for 1 year in stainless steel tanks in order to give the wine a more fruity character with no influence of oak. Wine unfined and unfiltered.
Perinet winery has been reborn with the new vintage, 2016. After years of uncertainty, it has been refloated by a group of investors led by Kevin McGlynn, who have managed to put together a great group of professionals, with the well-known oenologist Toni Sanchez-Ortiz heading the project. Perinet is a stunning estate located at the heart of the prestigious Priorat region, in the rugged Montsant mountains, between the villages of Poboleda and La Morera de Montsant. The winery is modern and innovative; its award-winning architecture, Gaudí-inspired barrel caves, and inviting hospitality make it a place not to be missed to explore the region and the Perinet wines. The estate owns 3 different fincas: “Mas Vell”, a south-facing vineyard with mature vines; “Mas d’en Xesc”; and “Finca Pendents”, a north-facing pronounced slope vineyard, totalling an extension of 55 ha, where the vines are growing on terraces and slopes on licorella soil which characterises the wines as authentic, powerful and unique.
Tasting Notes: Intense and forward with a distinct spiciness and minerality, juicy red cherry and black fruits, wild herbs, fennel and black liquorice and earthy tones. Entry on the palate is soft and pleasant, displaying forest fruits, raspberry and strawberry, friendly tannin with bright acidity, and a slightly spicy and mineral character, with a fresh and pleasant finish.
It is recommended to decant this wine at least 2 hours ahead before serving. This wine will keep well during the next 8-10 years and will gain even more complexity with the time in bottle.
