Tros Nou is the new wine from Celler Joan Simó in Porrera, a red blend made from centenary vines of Hairy Grenache and Carignan sourced from a single estate, "Tros Nou", a small vineyard situated near the village of Bellmunt and property of Gerad’s grandfather, Joan Simó. The wine gets classified as "Vi de Vila" de Bellmunt.

Vinification:

Harvested manually and aged during 18 months in new French oak. Very small production. For its first vintage, there has been a production of 970 bottles.

Tasting Notes:

Rich, with sun-warmed red and black fruits and a lovely spicy element to round it off. Drink now or store it and enjoy as it ages in bottle.

THE WINERY

The winery is owned by Gerard Batllevell Simó, a descendant of a family of local winegrowers. In 1999, he restored the basement of their historic house in Porrera into a modern winery, and with his father's support and the advice of family and friends, he produced the first vintage that same year.

Their vineyards, mainly dominated by slate soils, known locally as llicorella, are split into 2 zones: the high-altitude, cool vineyards around the village of Porrera and La Garrantxa:

Les Eres, situated on a steep terraced coster overlooking the village of Porrera, has 3 hectares planted 93 years ago with vines of Carignan and Grenache.

The lower, hotter vineyards around Bellmunt de Priorat, Tros Nou, have 3800 vines planted 87 years ago, mainly with Grenache peluda and Carignan.

Els Carners, was planted only 83 years ago with 1500 vines of Carignan and Grenache.
