Raúl Pérez makes this wine at the Pérez family winery, Bodegas y Viñedos Castro Ventosa, situated in the village of Valtuille de Abajo, at the foot of the slope of the Castro. Founded by the Pérez family in 1752, the winery has since remained in the hands of the family. They work 75 hectares of vineyards in Bierzo, planted with the indigenous red variety Mencía. 

To make the Castro de Valtuille Mencía joven, Raúl Pérez brings out the most from the youngest vines in the estate, with an age range of 20–40 years. The fruits for the wine are harvested by hand. Vinified and fermented in stainless steel vats and spent about 2 months in larger wood vats before being bottled without cold stabilisation or filtration.

Tasting notes: 

Full-flavoured dark fruits and liquorice, ripe fruits, and hints of spice and minerals. Smooth, soft, and complex, with rich red and black berries finishing long with a touch of black pepper.
